Employment pension insurance companies: Keys to coping

Preventive mental health care to support work ability

How are you? Many employees respond reflexively: "Fine." But in reality, their minds may be crowded with thoughts, burdens, and questions that they have not had the space—or the language—to express.

The keys to coping are online coaching, which gives employees the opportunity to pause, organize their thoughts, and relieve psychological stress through writing.

The aim is to support coping at work, increase resilience, and strengthen the connection to one's own work—individually and safely.

The coaching is based on researched methods that are ideal for low-threshold mental health care. It does not require any special skills—just a willingness to take a moment to breathe and listen to what your inner voice is trying to say.

Who is coaching suitable for?

The training is specifically designed for:

  • for those engaged in expert work

  • for overworked teams

  • organizations that want to invest in preventive measures to improve work ability

  • for use by customer organizations of employment pension companies as part of work ability services

Why does writing work?

Writing is a simple but effective way to support well-being at work:

  • It helps to put into words that stressful "something" at work—a feeling, situation, or thought that is difficult to grasp.

  • It helps you organize your thoughts first, which lowers the threshold for starting a conversation with, for example, your supervisor.

  • It reminds you of what motivates you at work and feels meaningful—or, on the other hand, what might need to be changed.

In coaching sessions, participants write rather than perform. Sharing texts is voluntary, and everyone participates in their own way. The coaching utilizes bibliotherapy methods that strengthen self-awareness, support emotional regulation, and aid mental recovery.

Effectiveness and necessity

Mental health issues are the most common reason for disability retirement in Finland. In 2023, more than 100,000 Finns were on long-term sick leave due to mental health problems, resulting in an estimated loss of 5.8 million working days. The cost of lost work was at least €1 billion per year. (Source: Kela, 2024)

Preventive measures – such as low-threshold coaching that provides space for reflection and self-awareness – are critical in supporting work ability.

Writing is a cost-effective and easy-to-implement method that strengthens mental resilience.

Implementation & practical information

  • Implementation: Online training (Zoom/Teams)

  • Duration: 6 x 60 min (weekly or intensive)

Modular structure – can be built to suit the needs of your organization

The training consists of six modular sections, which can be implemented as a series or selected as a set of modules to suit your needs:

  1. Open the floodgates – Let's clear the congestion in our heads

  2. Making feelings visible – We put experiences into words and find words for even difficult feelings

  3. Clear boundaries – We practice recognizing our limits

  4. Bring out your strengths – We strengthen hope and remember successes

  5. Meaningful – We restore the connection to the value of our own work

  6. Writing as a habit – Creating your own writing routine for mental well-being

Each time also functions as a single stop, but together they form an impressive process.

"The creative writing workshop was part of our team day at Advance. Nice exercises fuelled imagination, creativity and team spirit and were suitable for writers of all levels. I think everyone learned something new, both about their colleagues and their own abilities."

- Mikko Taivainen, Advance B2B

"A well-planned package, which even included practical tasks suitable for a distance workshop. The facilitator knew the target group very well and had taken this into account in the design of the workshop. The workshop was of a suitable length, refreshing and after which it felt a little easier to apply creativity to one's own work."
