What can you fit into 100 words?
Surprisingly a lot.
A whole encounter. A memory. A person. A turning point. A landscape. A little drama. Maybe even a whole life.
A "Raapale" is a text exactly 100 words long. It's short enough to be written even in the middle of a busy week, and long enough to convey something that sticks in your mind.
In this six-week online course, you'll write one short piece each week and try a slightly different approach to the world of 100 words each time.
You don't need any prior experience with creative writing. All you need is the desire to see what happens when you have 100 words at your disposal. Not 99. Not 101.
But exactly one hundred.
Six weeks, six scraps
Over the course of six weeks, we'll approach a 100-word text from a slightly different angle each time.
We experiment with different openings and closings, develop characters and situations, shift perspectives, and try out different styles and forms of writing. Sometimes the starting point might be a single sentence; other times, it might be an image, an observation, a person, or a situation.
At the same time, a hundred words teach you a surprising amount about writing. When space is limited, you have to think about what’s essential in the text. Which details are necessary? What can be left out? What doesn’t need to be explained?
However, the goal isn't to squeeze the most effective performance out of the text. Above all, "Raapale" is an invitation to play, experiment, and be surprised by where 100 words take you this time.
Here's How the Course Works
For six weeks, you'll receive a new assignment in your email once a week. Each assignment will include a brief introduction, as well as tips and inspiration for writing.
Based on the assignment, write your own 100-word piece whenever it’s convenient for you. If you’d like, you can share your finished text in the course’s private Facebook group, where you can also read other participants’ pieces and discuss them. I’ll be in the group as a facilitator throughout the course.
You are not required to post anything. You can participate in the group discussions or follow along from the sidelines—or complete the entire course at your own pace using the assignments sent to you by email.
Why exactly 100 words?
At first, this restriction might sound like a hassle. Often, though, it actually makes writing easier.
When you can't tell everything, you have to choose.
What is important about this moment? What does the reader need to know? What single detail will bring this character to life? Could I leave this unexplained? What if I ended the text two sentences earlier?
Writing in short notes teaches you to condense, narrow your focus, and make choices. At the same time, it teaches you to trust the reader—you don’t have to write everything down.
And above all, it's fun to write a short story.
A hundred words is such a small number that the barrier to getting started remains low. But just when you think you’re writing only a very short piece, you might find that you’ve written an entire world.

Participation in the “100 Words” online course costs 67 euros (including 25.5% VAT).
